Summit calls for large-scale subsurface mineralization of CO2

Leading international scientists, policymakers, industry experts and climate advocates convened at the Carbfix Mineralization Summit in Reykjavík, Iceland, to discuss the global status and potential of CO2 mineralization.

Towards the end of the summit, over 120 participants, listed below, signed a statement highlighting the need for large-scale subsurface mineralization of CO2 to combat the climate crisis. You can download a PDF of the statement here.

All summit participants, both onsite and online, were consulted on the wording of a draft and subsequently given the opportunity to sign the final version.

The statement remains open for additional signatures.

Those who wish to join the list of supporters of the statement can do so by sending an email to carbfix@carbfix.com. A full name is required, and affiliation is optional.

Statement on subsurface CO2 mineralization

Issued following the Carbfix Mineralization Summit held in Reykjavík, Iceland on 14-15 Sept 2023

The signatories, participating at the Carbfix Mineralization Summit 2023 held in Reykjavík, agree that subsurface mineralization of CO2

  • Presents a very significant and largely untapped potential for safe and permanent storage of captured CO2
  • Has emerged as a tested and viable approach ready for scale-up
  • Enables the achievement of a high quality, permanent, and verifiable storage component of both carbon removals and emission reductions (i.e. CO2 captured from the atmosphere or industrial sources)
  • Enhances and accelerates a natural carbon cycle, with rocks being by far the largest carbon reservoir, containing more than 99% of the Earth’s carbon, with a residence time from thousands to millions of years
  • Is feasible in geographies that are not otherwise well-served by carbon sinks
  • Is necessary on a large scale to reach the world’s climate targets, complementing other mitigation efforts that must also be rigorously pursued, and with due consideration to the same robust environmental, social, and quality assurances that must be applied to all mitigation approaches
  • Should be given full attention and consideration as a distinct approach within national and international frameworks that govern climate action, as well as at forums that discuss such action
